Don’t we all wish that the world was a better place? Don’t we cringe when we read of the horrible things going around us? Shudder at the misery of others? Criticize the government, curse the system? Lament the unfair of it all?
We all wish for a fairer world, people living happily together in harmony, educated, well fed, able to explore the endless opportunities in life. Pessimists call us fools and realists mock us with facts. Don’t you think it’s time to change all that?
But can one person really change the world? In Mother Teresa’s words, ‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.’ Everyone of us can create ripples of change and with time it will amount to something substantial for a cause that’s close to our heart. Every tiny change today will cumulate to bring a dramatically different tomorrow.
Obama said, ‘Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.’
So how do we begin? When do we begin? Well let’s begin now, right at this moment. Start believing that what you do makes a difference. Then go about making that difference. Bit by bit. Start changing the world by changing yourself first. Be the change you want to see in the world. Trust me, you really can change the world if you care enough.
Start with yourself, move on and create a change in your family, then neighborhood, then expand to your village, city, state, country, world… The opportunities are limitless. Choose something that bothers you the most. Research and find out the root cause. See how you can contribute towards changing that. Then go about doing it. You never know which ripple of change you create could go viral and get people thinking, doing something about it, following your example. You have the ability to influence our society, bring about that change.
Vision without action is merely a dream. Let’s convert our dreams into reality. It’s time to take action.
